Student Activity Scholarships
BGC started providing student activity need-based scholarships in August 2018. These scholarships are for local students (Pre-K through 12th grade) for local activities. From August – November 2018 we have provided 30 activity scholarships (average of $100) for activities such as: cub scouts, football, cheer, soccer, Boys and Girls Club, Brenham Children’s Chorus, dance, and leadership camp. Research shows that students who are in extracurricular activities, after-school programs and youth organizations/events show positive improvements in academic, education, social, civic, and physical development. Students want to participate because of excitement, enjoyment, and to be with peers. However, not all students and their families can afford the activity. There is consistent and strong evidence between participation and academic achievement, school completion, post-secondary educational attainment, lowered rates of smoking and drug use, and the quantity and quality of interaction between students and their parents. (Society for Research and Child Development, 2006; Developmental Psychology, 2008; BMC Public Health, 2015). The summary of research is found at: Afterschool Programs Make a Difference: Findings From the Harvard Family Research Project.” Afterschool Programs Make a Difference: Findings From the Harvard Family Research Project - SEDL Letter, Afterschool, Family, and Community, Volume XX, Number 2, August 2008, www.sedl.org/pubs/sedl- letter/v20n02/afterschool_findings.html. |
HR Night
This event is a 2-day event at the high school for participants. The first day career counselors teach students about interview skills, interview dress, and how to write a resume’. The second day, local business people provide mock interviews for the participants. This allows the students to apply what they have learned, and have real-life interview experience. |
Money Management Day
The BISD 8th graders are required to take a one-semester class in money management. At the end of each semester, each class visits the Bank of Brenham for a tour, which includes the basic functions of a bank, how to write and deposit a check, and interaction with bank employees. At the end of the tour, the students use their $8.00 from their cashed check at Must Be Heaven for lunch. |
College Day for Parents
Parents are provided a checklist of enrollment items for high school students planning to attend college. The enrollment process begins in a student’s junior year of high school. Parents and the students are provided with a timeline related to admissions, testing, scholarships/financial aid, housing, advising, registration, and payment. |
Printing and Support for the PEACE/PALS program
BGC partners with the Washington County Chamber of Commerce for the PEACE program. This program provides local, participating businesses with the same core values for their business as are being taught in the schools. Each academic year there are ten core values taught in the Brenham and Burton elementary schools, as well as used on other campuses. The high school mentoring program called PALS connects students with each business to help the business come up with ideas on how to use the monthly core value for their customers and employees. |
